The producers of Dancing with the Stars have decided that America just isn’t ready for a same-sex couple to hit the dance floor in the next season of the ABC reality show. This decision apparently came after plans for Portia de Rossi to join the new cast fell through.
“If Portia had agreed then this would have been a done deal,” an ABC insider told Popeater.com’s Rob Shuter. “She was the only star that could have pulled this off without completely offending the program’s conservative viewers.”
Well, there is Portia’s wife, talk show host, Ellen Degeneres…
But since de Rossi rejected the show’s offer, producers have decided to hold off on the concept for the next few years and “not rush into creating a same-sex dancing couple just to get attention and publicity.”
Dancing with the Stars isn’t shy at all about stunt casting, though. They’ve done it before with cast members like Kate Gosselin, Florence Henderson, and Bristol Palin, but the producers are also aware of the show’s predominantly conservative audience, and the fact that the last contestant that was outspoken about gay rights (Margaret Cho), was quickly given the boot.
“With all the debate going on about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in the country, this would have been the perfect time to do this,” a Hollywood casting director told Shuter. “Yet the show has never been about pushing the envelope. It’s a huge hit because it doesn’t make anyone uncomfortable.”
And according to sources, fans looking for another controversial cast in the next season of the show will be very disappointed.
“After Bristol, I predict it will be the most boring bunch of stars ever cast next season,” says the casting director. “When you have a hit as big as this on your hands, everyone is scared to mess it up.”
