Outfits Under $100: Stand Out in Winter White

Natalie Portman, Gucci Model, Miley Cyrus, Julianne Hough

It’s long after Labor Day, but who says white is off limits? Rules were made to be broken, especially fashion rules. Lately, celebs and models alike have been rocking winter white on the red carpet, the runway and even on the streets of Paris (like the stylish Miss Hough in the photo above). Whether you’re walking around campus, heading to a fancy party or just attending class, you can easily and inexpensively incorporate white into your winter wardrobe.

Here are three chic and cheap outfits that will have you standing out in winter white:

Outfit #1: Snowy White Outerwear

Product Info: Coat, Turtleneck, Beret, Pants, Boots

Though you might expect white outerwear to blend in with winter’s snowy surroundings, the truth is that you’ll stand out amidst a sea of standard black and blue coats.

This is an accessible outfit for fashionistas looking to ease into the winter white trend; wearing a white coat is by far the least daring way to try this style. Try wearing a white turtleneck under the coat for monochromatic look, which was a recent runway trend. Add a red beret, and this white and black ensemble will become undeniably chic.

Outfit #2: Little White Dress

Product Info: Dress, Swing Coat, Flats, Tights

Instead of a little black dress for winter parties, try a little white dress a la Natalie Portman (shown in the photo above). A white dress isn’t just for summer, particularly if you control how much skin you’re showing. Adding opaque tights and a retro-inspired swing coat is a chic and classy way to stay covered.

Although LWDs are appropriate for winter, don’t just recycle your white dresses from summer. You should avoid light, summery fabrics like eyelet or cotton in favor of chiffon or silk for the most winter-appropriate look.

Outfit #3: White Jeans in Winter

Product Info: Sweater, White Jeans, Boots

That’s right: white jeans in winter are both stylish and acceptable. Several designers showed white trousers and jeans in their fall and winter collections this season, so take a fashion risk and resurrect your white jeans from closet Siberia. The key to wearing white jeans in winter is pairing them with cold weather fabrics and textures, like this wool sweater and these suede boots.

What do you think?

Would you wear white in winter? Where do you draw the line — a coat, a dress or white jeans? Do you believe in fashion restrictions like the “no white after Labor Day” rule? Do you like these outfits? Please leave a comment!
